The MHPSS Collaborative’s Senior TA Ashley Nemiro co-authored this review examining the extent to which MHPSS research generated since 2010 has contributed to the public health evidence base and how this has influenced and impacted programming and policy in humanitarian settings. The review found that the evidence base for MHPSS has grown significantly over the last 10 years,. but that several knowledge gaps remain, as does the divide between research and practice. It recommends for MHPSS intervention research to be more responsive to the needs on the ground.

The MHPSS in CAAFAG Programmes Resource Package (field-test version) is an inter-agency package of resources that aims to support the integration of MHPSS into programmes for the prevention, release, and reintegration of children associated with armed forces and armed groups (CAAFAG). It offers evidence-based guidance on how to support the mental health and well-being of children, families, and communities in emergency, humanitarian, and post-conflict settings through CAAFAG programming. There is evidence that multi-layer MHPSS approaches and interventions that are gender- and child development-sensitive and safely delivered in non-targeted ways can improve MHPSS outcomes among CAAFAG across diverse contexts.

Findings from a study conducted by the MHPSS Collaborative of ODA and private development finance for the years 2018-2019 reveal that, despite small increases, child and family
mental health and psychosocial support (child and family MHPSS) remains severely underfunded.

Even with small increases in funding over the past years, the small fraction of funding for child and family MHPSS is woefully insufficient to offset the high demand for mental health and psychosocial services across the globe. The reality in 2019 is that only 0,31% of ODA funding and 1.0% of private sector funding went to child and family MHPSS.

The story-book, a sequel to the immensely successful ‘My Hero is You: How kids can fight COVID-19!’, is being released in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new story, aimed primarily at children aged 6-11 years, sees the return of Ario, a fantasy creature who travels the world helping children find hope in the future and joy in simple pleasures.

The content of the book drew from survey responses from more than 5000 children, parents, caregivers and teachers from around the world on the challenges they continue to face in the second year of the pandemic. This was developed by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee’s (IASC) Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Reference Group in partnership with the MHPSS Collaborative.

‘I Support My Friends’ builds on the principles of Psychological First Aid to equip older children and adolescents with the skills and knowledge to support their friends in distress, under the mentorship and guidance of trusted adults. The four-part resource kit has been jointly developed by UNICEF, Save the Children, the MHPSS Collaborative, and WHO to give facilitators a comprehensive package of tools and resources to best equip children and adolescents in safe and effective peer support, together with adult mentors.
